All technogeeks

I seem to recall there is or was a paper somewhere on Metalink that describes the steps needed to enable a payroll process to multi-thread. Does anyone have a copy, or can you please let me know the doc number?

Ta muchly

Clive,

I haven't seen a document for multi-threading, but Note:181304.1 may have everything you need.

Regards,

Jairo

Cheers Jairo, but that's not the one I'm thinking of - I'm certain there was a white paper that talked about doing things to tables and indexes, like setting FREELISTS values in the 'storage' clause of the table/index definition. I remember part of my SHN activities was to prove the payroll run could complete inside x minutes, and one of the things we had to set up was multi-threading (in which PAY_ACTION_PARAMETERS values certainly played a part) - but there was defo some dba involvement too.

Hi

Would the following note be of any interest. It has settings for inittrans etc.
Note:1079475.6
Subject: HRMS: TIPS FOR IMPROVING PAYROLL PERFORMANCE

Just wondering, are u referring to Andy Mcghee's white paper for HRMS healthcheck where he discusses about payroll performance and guidelines.

I can send u a copy if you cant find one
cheers, vin

CT,

Bit rough and ready but I thought

INSERT INTO pay_action_parameters
(parameter_name ,parameter_value)
values('THREADS' ,'10')

usually does the trick. The parameter_value is governed by the number of cpus and ratio of workers defined on your concurrent manager (rough rule of thumb, 2 workers per cpu)

This also determines the number of threads data pump uses which along with running gather schema stats during a conversion run can help performance.

HTH

Jay

Best bet is to use action parameter sets. Bear in mind that these parameters affect all payroll processes, not just the payroll engine itself. If you have multiple payrolls of differing sizes you may want only some of them to run multi-threaded - running multiple threads on a small payroll will have an adverse affect - this is because of the initial process hit in chunking up the assignment actions.

I did produce a fairly simple prediction model that estimates run times based on payroll size, no of cpu's etc for ECC a couple of years back. It drew on information that I had sought from the user community via a questionnaire (issued at a HR Sig).
If it will be of use i will dig it out and attach to a post...
