Hi
I guess this is more for our international users, but also for our freelance europeans....

Anyone planning on attending this OHUG

A few old hands from the NHS project are discussing attending (including myself if i can get a pass-out from home smile )

I wonder if our American correspondent, Ms Beach, is planning to go along this year?

Sounds like it'd be a good trip - but not sure my accountant would sign it off as a necessary business expense...?

Strangely that is a similar argument aired by my better half smile

If you were presenting, that would be legit...

How about a White Paper on 'The Secret Life of the Killer Script', or 'Business Groups What I Have Hacked (Allegedly)', or '3-figure Bar Bills and How to Get Them Approved'

Put me down for attending the last one please.

I'd love to go but am not sure where my next project will take me; maybe next year.

I've not checked with my accountant but why couldn't you put this trip through as a business expense; after all it will be training, meeting potential clients etc...

Regards,

Karen

Karen, the way it's been explained to me by my accountant is: You can put anything you like through the business, as long as you are prepared to defend it from a challenge by HMRC. Specifically in the case of 'business trips abroad', things like taking the entire family to Florida for a fortnight whilst there is a 3-day conference somewhere conveniently close to the parks would most certainly be regarded by our revenue friends as 'suspicious'! On the other hand, if you're going on your own, and staying for the exact duration of the event and no longer, and can produce documentary evidence that you actually attended the event, then you're probably on firmer ground...

From discussions with others here, and with my accountant, this would be a perfectly legitimate business expense. As a HCM/HRMS consulting company, what other reason would you need to attend a HCM/HRMS conference?

Not only could it be classified as training, but you could also identify it as being an ideal tool to network and sell your services to others - especially if you knocked-up some cheap'n'cheerful business cards/flyers to hand-out to all an sundry.

As it happens, i'd prefer to attend the Oracle World conference, which is aimed more on the technical side (RDBMS/Development tools etc), however i will give serious consideration to blagging my way to the UK Appsworld gig later this year.
