Hello all

I am currently looking into the feasibility of hosting an R12 EBS sandbox environment, principally for the use by fellow forum members.

I wondered if anyone had any views on whether this would be something people would actually want/use at all.

All feedback welcome.

Regards

Barry

Sounds interesting... I take it you will be responsible for all the hacking of business group info, as per usual! whistle

Hello Barry,

Good idea, but personally, as with the environment provided by Solution Beacon, the main problem I have with sandbox environments is that I often want to look at table definitions, and other back-end structures, and providing this access to your sandbox environment would, of course, be very dangerous.

If you have any idea as to a way to provide read-only access, but with the ability to utilise packages and functions, and the ability to populate FND_SESSIONS, I think this would be a VERY interesting alternative.

Sorry if I sound negative. I think your offer is very good, especially as the Solution Beacon instance is SO messy.

Regards,

Peter.

Barry,
as long as the policies for refreshing it every so often are in place it should work...good idea!

Hi Peter.
I agree entirely with your view - the Solution Beacon sandbox proved limiting in its usefulness due to the limitations.

Strangely we have a similar situation where i am currently working, where we have a production copy system with named readonly accounts for access to the back-end. However enough priviliges have been opened up to enable function calls and maintenance of fnd_sessions etc. I think it was quite tricky to set up and maybe beyond what i can achieve.
Regards
Barry

Yes refresh policies would need to be established up front.

I think the frst hurdle i have is not the set-up/configuration of the environment itself, but where it is hosted. I could self-host but fear that my weedy home broadband connection would crumble with only a couple of active connections.

I am in conversation with my current hosting providers (the people who own the servers that host this and my other sites). Principal agreement is good, but again the questions come down to bandwidth allocations. I have a very generous monthly bandwidth allowance, but need to ensure that it is suitably distributed across my various hosted commitments.

Talks and plans are on-going.

Regards
Barry

The technical aspects of opening up an environment are fairly easy to do.

The issue i have (at present) is the fundamental stability of my internet connection (at home). We frequently suffer unannounced (and unexpected) outages and drop-outs; bad enough when working from home, but if trying to remotely access a system it proves a pain in the a**e!

My host ISP is not willing to host an apps instance on their boxes on my behalf (as there are many licencing issues with which they are not happy with). So i cannot use their lovely fat internet connection.

I am currently looking into alternative broadband solutions. Given my remoteness (and distance from the exchange) i have fewer options than Albanian TV
