Wow, terminating/rehiring on the basis of a change of hours sounds a bit extreme... must be a nightmare for supply teachers then!

For the 'Flexible Retirement' sounds like you might reasonably want to rehire for that: but only that, not the hours changes. All of this just my opinion you understand, as ever I am more than happy to be shot down by all you pensioner experts - please show all working though!

Just for a bit of background, Martin: are you in the process of implementing Oracle Payroll/HR, and if so what legacy system are you currently using?

I agree CT, it does seem a bit extreme. I'm still not convinced that a flexible retirement requires it but there may be some quirky rule for teachers I'm not aware of. I would be interested in getting some more detail of the procedures that might help us to understand it a bit more.

You could well be right about the Flexible Retirement.

My thinking was driven by the notion that terminating someone with the (seeded) reason 'Retirement' has connotations for other areas - it creates a person type usage 'Retiree' which then has knock-on effects for e.g. benefits.

I’ve asked about this at my current site, and whilst changes of hours certainly wouldn’t require a new record, the flexible retirement issue is more difficult.

When a teacher retires mid month but wishes to come back on reduced terms, they need a break in service of 24 hours before they can be rehired again whilst also picking up their pension. This isn’t possible mid month as they need a final process date in place so have to be set up again under a new employee number.

That sounds like a good enough reason then. Thanks for the explanation Chris.
